Understanding A2A Economics and x402 Payments

Published October 4, 2026 • Reading time: 6 min

Agent-to-Agent (A2A) Economy

While traditional economies connect humans and businesses, the A2A economy aims to enable direct transactions between autonomous agents. An agent can pay another to obtain a service, analysis, or resource.

The Payment Problem

For this economy to work, a fast, cheap, and automatable payment method is needed. Traditional solutions (credit cards, wire transfers) are too slow and expensive for frequent microtransactions.

x402: Pay-Per-Call Protocol

x402 is an emerging standard that allows payment per call. Each API request can include a small amount (e.g. 0.10 USDC) that is settled immediately and automatically.

x402 Characteristics

Benefits for Agents

Example Usage

A search agent can consult an analysis service (like Sentinel Probe) for 0.10 USDC, receive a structured response, and use that analysis to make a decision. No subscription, no sign-up, just pure service.
